On July 22, 2010, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered an advisory opinion addressing Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia. The court’s 10-4 non-binding advisory opinion ruled that Kosovo’s decision to secede from Serbia did not violate general international law.

A spontaneous demonstration is currently ongoing in north Mitrovica, Kosovo. Approximately 1,500 protestors have gathered north of the East Bridge over the Ibar River (vicinity of the Bosniak Mahala) to protest Government of Kosovo plans to open a Citizen Services Center in north Mitrovica. According to Kosovo Police, there are reports of shots fired and hand grenades thrown by the protestors. It is unknown when the demonstration will cease.

Starting July 1st, 2010, the American Citizen Services unit will no longer issue warden messages regarding routine demonstrations taking place in Kosovo. Instead, information about routine demonstrations will be posted on the U.S. Embassy Pristina’s website, under the heading “Demonstration Notices.” Please monitor our website regularly for information about demonstration activities in the country.

There is a demonstration scheduled for Friday, 18 June 2010 on Mother Teresa Blvd in the center of Pristina, starting at 1400 hours. A number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and cultural societies are organizing the event in support of the wearing of the Islamic headscarf (hijab) by girls in Kosovo public schools. Estimates on the numbers of participants vary from 100 to 1000 people, but our best information at this time indicates that there will probably be around 200 participants.
